The Merrimack women’s hockey team ended its regular season with a 5-3 loss to No. 6 UConn in Storrs, Connecticut, on Saturday. Despite trailing earlier in the game, Merrimack managed to tie the score in the third period before UConn secured the win.
Mady Cipolla led Merrimack’s offense by scoring two goals, including the tying goal at 5:40 of the third period. This came shortly after Olivia Grabianowski narrowed UConn’s lead to one with a slap shot that made it 3-2.
UConn responded with what would become the game-winning goal 11 minutes into the final period and later added an empty-net goal in the last minute of play.
Five Merrimack players—Maggie Kime, Madison Vittands, Kerttu Lehmus, Stina Sandberg and Emma Pfeffer—each recorded an assist during the game.
Solveig Gisler reached a milestone by appearing in her 100th career game for Merrimack.
Looking ahead, Merrimack will enter the Hockey East playoffs as the tournament’s tenth seed. The team is set to begin postseason play on Wednesday against an opponent yet to be determined.
