Matt DeShiro led the Merrimack Warriors to a 4-2 victory over Canisius in Buffalo, NY, on March 20. DeShiro recorded three hits and drove in two runs, including the game-winning RBI in the fourth inning of the series opener.
The win is significant as it sets a positive tone for the Warriors at the start of their series against the Golden Griffins. Strong performances from both hitters and pitchers contributed to the team’s success.
Colby Barker pitched six scoreless innings and earned his fifth win of the season. He is now tied for first nationally in victories and ranks fourth in earned run average with a mark of 0.35. The Warriors took an early lead when DeShiro hit a leadoff double followed by Jayden Hamilton’s ground-rule double, making it 1-0.
Joey Frammartino and Greg Cristino each reached base twice with a single and a walk apiece. Garrett McGovern tied the game at 2-2 for Canisius with an RBI walk in the third inning. However, Chris Goode’s double in the fourth set up DeShiro’s decisive RBI that put Merrimack ahead for good.
The teams are scheduled to meet again tomorrow for a double-header starting at noon.
