Anna Gedacht pitched a complete game as the Merrimack Softball team defeated Iona 3-2 on March 29 at Warrior Diamond in North Andover, Massachusetts.
The win allowed Merrimack to avoid a series sweep against Iona. The result came after the Warriors fell behind early but rallied in the bottom of the first inning.
Caity Lemay hit a two-run double to left field, bringing home Sam Russalesi and Alex Miller to give Merrimack an early lead. Although Iona tied the game in the third inning, Melaney Velasco scored on an error by the Gaels, putting Merrimack ahead again at 3-2.
Gedacht was effective throughout, allowing only one hit over the final four innings. In a key moment during the sixth inning, she struck out a batter with two outs and runners on base to preserve the lead. She then retired all three batters in order in the seventh inning to secure the victory for her team.
Looking ahead, Merrimack will begin an eight-game road trip with a doubleheader against Sacred Heart in Fairfield on April 3.
