Trevor Hoskin scored two goals to help the No. 8 Merrimack College men’s hockey team defeat No. 9 UMass-Lowell, 5-3, in the opening round of the Hockey East Tournament at Lawler Arena on March 11.

The victory allows Merrimack to advance in the tournament and sets up a matchup against No. 1 Providence on Saturday. The game was significant as it marked an important step for Merrimack in postseason play.

Hoskin opened the scoring just over a minute into the contest and added his second goal late in the second period, giving Merrimack a commanding 4-1 lead. Parker Lalonde provided additional insurance with a goal late in the third period, securing the Warriors’ win.

Nick Pierre contributed with a power-play goal early in the second period, helping Merrimack maintain its advantage. The team capitalized on one of its two power-play opportunities while successfully defending against all three of UMass-Lowell’s chances with an extra skater. Goaltender Max Lundgren made 23 saves during the game.

With this win, Merrimack moves forward in the Hockey East Tournament and will face top-seeded Providence next.
