Max Lundgren, junior goaltender for Merrimack College, signed an entry-level contract with the Boston Bruins organization on Mar. 29. The announcement follows a record-setting season in which Lundgren helped lead the Merrimack men’s ice hockey team to significant achievements.
Lundgren’s signing is notable as it comes after he was unanimously named Hockey East Tournament MVP, highlighted by a 49-save performance against UConn in the championship at TD Garden. He also set program records for most saves and minutes played in a single season.
“Obviously, very excited,” Lundgren said Sunday in front of teammates and media members. “This is a dream since I was a little kid, to sign an NHL contract. So just really excited, ready to go.”
The Swedish native will report to the Providence Bruins, Boston’s American Hockey League affiliate, within weeks. His performance during his junior year included starting all 38 games with a 2.55 goals against average and .920 save percentage over 1,172 saves.
Head coach Scott Borek commented on the achievement: “It’s tremendous,” Borek said. “It’s pretty special to see that come to reality. And to have it happen right in our own backyard, I think it’s really special for our whole group.”
Lundgren’s impact extended through both regular season and tournament play; he stopped 130 of 136 shots faced during the four-game Hockey East Tournament and delivered strong performances at TD Garden before being offered his professional contract shortly after Merrimack’s NCAA Tournament exit.
