The Merrimack College athletic department announced on Apr. 4 that women’s basketball head coach Kelly Morrone has resigned to take the head coaching position at the University at Albany.
The departure of Morrone comes after six seasons leading the Warriors, a period marked by significant achievements for the program. Athletic director Joe Foley said, “We want to extend our sincere appreciation to Kelly, as we are grateful for how she elevated the women’s basketball program during her time at Merrimack. We wish Kelly continued success in her coaching career.”
Morrone expressed gratitude in a statement: “I want to extend my sincere gratitude to President Hopey, athletic director Joe Foley and the executive board for the opportunity and trust during my time at Merrimack College. Together, we experienced an incredible climb through the Division I era — one defined by growth, resilience, and a relentless commitment to excellence.
To the Merrimack players, alumni, support staff, fans, coaches and community — thank you for your belief, your passion, and your support. It has been an honor to be part of something so special. I leave with deep gratitude and will always be a proud supporter of Merrimack.”
During her tenure starting with the 2020-21 season, Morrone led Merrimack through its transition from Division II’s Northeast 10 Conference (NE10) into Division I competition in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). She was named MAAC Coach of the Year in 2025-26 after guiding the team to third place in regular season play and reaching back-to-back conference tournament semifinals. The Warriors earned their first-ever invitation to the Women’s National Invitational Tournament (WNIT) following their best record under Morrone at 19-13 this past season.
Morrone concludes her time at Merrimack with an overall record of 74-92 over six seasons. The college has begun a national search for its next women’s basketball head coach.
