Merrimack men’s basketball secures MAAC title after double-overtime win over Iona

The Merrimack men’s basketball team secured the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) regular-season title outright after a double-overtime win against Iona, finishing with an 88-86 victory at Lawler Arena on Sunday. This result also marked the Warriors’ first undefeated home season since 1990-1991, as they posted an 11-0 record at home for the 2025-26 campaign.

Six Merrimack players scored in double figures during the game. The Warriors overcame a six-point deficit late in the first overtime and trailed by one point in the second overtime before clinching the win.

Kevair Kennedy led Merrimack with 20 points, adding seven assists, six rebounds, and five steals while playing nearly every minute of the game. Ernest Shelton contributed 18 points and six rebounds, hitting three three-pointers, including one in double-overtime that extended Merrimack’s lead to 87-83 with 25 seconds remaining.

Tye Dorset played all 50 minutes and scored 15 points with five assists, shooting 56 percent from the field. Todd Brogna recorded a season-high 13 points along with nine rebounds, five assists, and five blocks. Brogna made a key three-pointer late in the first overtime to help close the gap before Andres Marrero tied the game with three consecutive free throws. Marrero finished with 12 points and was plus-14 in his time on the court.

KC Ugwuakazi added ten points for Merrimack, scoring eight of them in the first half to give his team a narrow halftime lead.

The Warriors will conclude their regular season on the road against Canisius on Friday and Niagara on Sunday.
