Merrimack College’s men’s lacrosse team lost to the Marist Red Foxes, 10-9, in an overtime match at Duane Stadium on March 14. Sophomore Finn Dougherty scored the tying goal with just 11 seconds left in regulation, but Marist won the opening draw of overtime and converted it into the game-winning goal.
The Warriors, now holding a 1-7 record, mounted a strong comeback in the fourth quarter by scoring five goals. Freshman Jack Salva completed a hat trick during this period. Merrimack had trailed 8-4 entering the final frame but managed to tie the game with late goals from John Savino and Dougherty.
“I talked to the guys after the game just about how proud we were that they stuck with it, battled, continued to play with effort, toughness and discipline,” Merrimack head coach Mike Sciamanna said. “That fourth quarter, they really played complementary lacrosse. We talked to the defense and said we couldn’t give up another goal the rest of the game, and they didn’t until overtime. And offense did what they did.”
Colin Kruger and Dougherty each contributed two goals for Merrimack, while Savino added one goal and Rob Tyra provided two assists. Freshman Jesse D’Alonzo made 15 saves during the contest.
Merrimack is scheduled to return to action next Saturday when they face Mount St. Mary’s.
