Merrimack College men’s lacrosse team defeated the Iona Gaels 11-10 in a closely contested match on March 28. The game, held in North Andover, Massachusetts, saw several lead changes before Merrimack secured the victory.
The result is significant for Merrimack as it was a conference win and came during the team’s Senior Day celebration. The match highlighted contributions from both experienced players and newcomers.
Alystair Hemburger led the Warriors with three goals, achieving his first hat trick of the season on ten shots. Colin Kruger and Jack Salva each scored twice, with Salva adding two assists. Kruger netted the decisive goal following a forced turnover late in the game. Other scorers included Rob Tyra, Ryan Buonomo, Finn Dougherty, and Casey Herod.
Jaden Galfano earned his first win of the season after coming into play at halftime and making four saves over two quarters. Senior Cody Rehder collected six ground balls to lead Merrimack in that category. Daniel Bezrutchenko excelled as faceoff specialist by winning eleven possessions for his team.
Looking ahead, Merrimack will travel next Friday to face Manhattan University’s Jaspers in Riverdale at 11 a.m., continuing their conference schedule.
