Merrimack softball falls short in season opener against Valparaiso

Merrimack College’s softball team opened its 2026 season with a close contest against Valparaiso at the UNLV Rebel Classic in Las Vegas, ultimately losing 7-5. The Warriors trailed for much of the game but mounted a late rally.

Sam Russalesi put Merrimack on the scoreboard in the fifth inning with an RBI single. In the sixth, Madeline Arvai contributed another RBI single to left field and later scored on a hit by Megan Miller. Abby Choquette followed with her first collegiate home run, narrowing Valparaiso’s lead to two runs.

In the seventh inning, Merrimack earned a leadoff walk that brought the tying run to the plate but was unable to complete the comeback.

The Warriors will continue their participation in the UNLV Rebel Classic tomorrow with games against Utah Valley at 3 PM and UNLV at 9 PM Eastern Time. Both games are available for free viewing on the UNLV YouTube channel.
