Merrimack College’s softball team secured two victories over the Canisius Griffins on March 21, winning the first game 8-7 in a walkoff and the second game 5-1.
The doubleheader saw Merrimack come from behind in both games. In the opener, after trailing 3-0, Madeline Arvai hit a three-run home run to tie the score. The Warriors added three more runs in the second inning. Canisius responded by scoring four runs to take a late lead in the seventh inning, but Merrimack loaded the bases and scored both the tying and winning runs on walks to Sam Russalesi and Anna Mitrou.
Anna Gedacht pitched all seven innings of game one for Merrimack, earning her second win of the season and recording five strikeouts.
In game two, Arvai hit another three-run home run in the third inning to give Merrimack an early advantage. Russalesi contributed two more runs in the sixth inning. Pitcher MacKenzie Paulin threw all seven innings without allowing an earned run and gave up only two hits, marking her first win as a Warrior.
The Warriors are scheduled to play Canisius again tomorrow at noon, weather permitting. Fans can follow continuing coverage of Merrimack College Athletics on their official website and social media channels.
These wins highlight key contributions from both hitters and pitchers as Merrimack looks to continue its momentum through the series.
