Merrimack College’s softball team won both games of its home finale doubleheader against Niagara on Apr. 21 at Warrior Diamond.
The victories mark a strong end to the team’s home schedule, with Merrimack taking the first game 9-6 and securing a narrow 1-0 win in the second. The results were achieved on a sunny, cool afternoon, highlighting key performances from several players.
In the opening game, Merrimack scored four runs in the first inning with contributions from Caity Lemay, Sam Ryan, and Jamie Calkins. Madeline Arvai added to the lead with a two-run home run in the fourth inning. After Niagara tied the score in the sixth inning, Merrimack regained control as Ryan and Megan Miller drew bases-loaded walks before Calkins drove in another run with a sacrifice fly. Ryan earned the win by pitching two innings of relief without allowing any baserunners.
Game two saw Brandi Neil pitch a complete game shutout for Merrimack, striking out six batters. The Warriors scored their only run of that contest when Anna Mitrou singled in the third inning.
The team will finish its season on the road, starting with a three-game series against Siena scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.
