The Merrimack Warriors defeated the defending Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference champions, Fairfield, in a 4-3 victory on Apr. 3. The win marks the first time Merrimack has beaten Fairfield in program history and ends Fairfield’s eight-game conference win streak.
This result is significant for the Warriors as it demonstrates their ability to compete against top-ranked teams and could have implications for their standing within the conference.
Colby Barker led Merrimack with seven innings pitched, allowing only three hits and one run—a solo home run in the fifth inning. All four of Merrimack’s runs came during a pivotal seventh inning. Chris Goode drove in what would become the winning run off a fielder’s choice that included a throwing error by Fairfield. Matt DeShiro contributed with an RBI single along the third base line, while Greg Cristino capped his three-hit day with a double to drive in another run. Garrett McGovern and Jack Andrews also singled during this decisive frame.
Brooks Craigue added both offensive and defensive support, recording a hit at bat and making all six outs at shortstop to close out the game for Merrimack.
The Warriors are set to continue their series against Fairfield tomorrow at noon.
