The Merrimack women’s basketball team will continue its season after being invited on Mar. 17 to the Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) with an at-large bid. This marks the first time the program has received an invitation to the Division I WNIT.
The selection is significant for Merrimack, as it highlights a year of achievements and milestones for the team. Head Coach Kelly Morrone said, “It’s just been such a good year. So many firsts, so many postseason awards and to cap it off with this kind of exclamation point, to be able to host at home. It’s a historic season with an excellent cast of players that we’re going to get to see, at least for one more game.”
Merrimack will host New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) at Lawler Arena on Thursday at 7 p.m., giving fans another opportunity to watch the team compete on their home court.
The Warriors finished their regular season with a record of 19-12 overall and 15-5 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), securing third place in conference standings before advancing to the semifinals of the MAAC tournament. The team’s postseason run ended with a loss to Fairfield, which went on to win the MAAC Tournament and secure a spot in the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Tournament.
As Merrimack prepares for its WNIT debut, supporters and players alike look forward to extending what has already been described as a historic season.
