Washington, D.C. — Congressman Seth Moulton (D-MA) released the following statement in response to new criminal indictments against former President Donald Trump related to his hoarding of classified documents from the White House:

“This is yet another sad day in American history. Presidents have the solemn responsibility of protecting America’s most sensitive secrets. Therefore our national security depends on the character of our commander in chief. The former President is charged with not only failing to safeguard critical information, but knowingly abusing it. If proven guilty, this misuse of classified information would be an unprecedented breach of the law.

"My Republican colleagues blindly lining up to defend Trump with zero regard for the facts are playing a dangerous game. The self-proclaimed party of “law and order” doesn’t care much about our laws or our democratic order when it comes to supporting Trump. They’re more invested in him and their political prospects than the future of our country.

"Trump has repeatedly proven that he cannot be trusted to lead the American people. It will be far worse if he is reelected. Yet, much of today’s Republican party will never speak truth to power or hold Trump accountable. In their minds, he will be innocent even if proven guilty.

"Now let’s allow our justice system to do its job as it would with any other indicted American."
